NYSC ORIENTATION : THE FIRST DAY IN CAMP

Prospective Corp members are usually baraged with a lot of information, most of them conflicting. These informations range from Online registration, getting the call up letter, preparation for deployment and that picture listing the 'requirements' in camp. While getting this general information are thrown around, its harder to get detailed break down of what really would go down the first day at camp.
We'll explore what an Otondo should be expecting and how S/he could make it easier.
The first day of camp can roughly be broken down into five parts, arrival, accommodation, registration, kits collection and platoon registrations.

Part 1:  Arrival.

On arriving camp, you'd be directed to the police post, to have your luggage checked. The check is to ensure Corp members enter camp with the required materials and not prohibited materials.
Afterward the Corper will be required to write down their name and will be given a number. This number is very important during registration process, so it's important not to misplace it.
To avoid insults and embarrassment from the camp officials, it's imperative to have your documents and a pen handy at every registration post, those people mouth bad, better be warned.
Arriving camp on the very first day is not really an advantage in most camp, because the first day is very rowdy and unorganised. The second and third days are much easier days to arrive camp.

Part 2:  Accommodation.

The process of securing accommodation in camp may be easy or relatively difficult, depending on the camp.  Most times it takes place near the hostel assigned to your gender.
You will be required to show the temporary number you were given on arrival and then, write your name. You'd be given some very flat looking mattress and it is on these mattress that you'd sleep for three weeks.
Depending on the camp, bunk spaces may be taken based on how early you arrive at camp. If you like the lower bunk, you may have to go to camp early but if you don't mind any, no need to hurry.
Most of the bunk beds are damaged, so be prepared for 'special arrangements'.

Part 3: Registration.

Check for what your school number is and where they are registered. When you hear that number you go there and do your verification, this can be called Issuance of Counterfoil.

Always ask questions to avoid mistakes and insults o. Ensure your files and documents are with you at every point in time. rent. Well I can’t really recall every step but I know that the queue wasn’t that long.
Your call-up letter would be verified, after which you will be taking another passport regardless of the ones you have, for the computer registration and verification process.
Your permanent state code number for the whole service year will be issued to you after registration, ensure you fill whatever forms given to you correctly.
This process may take up to two hours, depending on the queue.

Part 4: Kit collection.

This is the part where you collect your NYSC issued kits. Most people find this part annoying and stressful but it does help catalyse socializing between Corp members. This is because, unless in rare cases of luck, you barely get your size. Those who arrive camp early would have collected the best fitting ones, this is an advantage of early arrival.
The kits that would be given to you first are a pair of tennis shoes and pair of jungle boots. You could then look for someone to exchange with – for example, if your shoes are too big, you may find someone with big feet who was given a smaller size and swap with them.

Part 5: Platoon Registration.
You would then have to locate your platoon stand with your platoon number.

The Platoon number is the last digit of your state code. For instance if your given state code number is 0804, then your platoon number is 4.
Every corper is attached to a platoon and most of your activities including morning drills and competitions would be conducted based on platoons.
The platoon is like your nuclear family for 3 weeks. Once you locate your platoon,  you will fill some forms and will be given a pair of the NYSC khaki Trouser, jacket, belt, a pair of white T-shirt, two white shorts and two pair of socks and NYSC crested vest.
In addition, You will be given some booklets containing informations such as, Camp Schedule, the NYSC anthem,  and the camp rules and regulations.

This is a summary of the most important parts of a typical first day in camp. There may be variations depending on the state, but the core processes are the same.

Enjoy your service!

Congratulations to those who have completed their online registration. I wish the others luck and Godspeed.  Alot of mails have been sent to us at corperslodge808@gmail.com, mostly to ascertain the information about registration and what you may or may not need in camp especially from the females. I'm glad we have been able to help alot of people with registration issues.  To tackle the questions about what you may or may not need in camp, we consulted two former corpers, and from the ladies perspective they synthesized the piece you are about to read.  I hope you find it helpful.  *** Ladies, i know you are excited about your posting for the compulsory national service.
